Very Happening site is all about ranking things: people, shows, bands, anything. If you can put it in a category it can appear at Very Happening.
Things are ranked in two ways. The primary method of ranking used by VeryHappening is by using Google. Google indexes pages on the internet and keeps track of the number of times a thing appears in the index. This is a good way of measuring the popularity of something - how many times the name appears in documents. There's only one thing worse than being talked about, right? The score returned by Google therefore represents the popularity of the thing - not a qualitative measure. Most of the scores you will see on VeryHappening have been calculated using this method.

The second method involves playing a ranking game where you are presented with a number of choices in a category. Just following the "Who do you like best?" link on each category page. Michael or Janet? Britney or Whitney? If you have a few quiet moments, these kinds of games can be mildly entertaining. Well we think so anyway. It's also fun to see how other people have voted.
More generally, VeryHappening serves as a testing ground for combining Web Services. We have dragged together freely available services, combined them at specific points (names of things) and hoped for the best. What you see is the result of our little experiment.
We have already explained how we use Google to rank things. Thanks Google for allowing us to use your API. Amazon is also used to provide us with book, CD and DVD recommendations via their web services API. Finally, the RSS feeds coming from the Yahoo Buzz have been used to flag where there is a buzz around a certain thing.
As time goes by we hope to examine the results which have been thrown up. Hopefully we'll discover some interesting insights into what people enjoy writing about on the web. Check out the Report page where you will be able to see a breakdown of the top people by nationality, gender, race and star sign. It's an ongoing work.
